Jemma's Story.....

 

Firstly, just a little about you and why you chose a route into teaching:

 

Which route did you choose and why?

I chose to undertake a two year Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education) course. The course was accredited by University of Bedfordshire and delivered weekly at Tresham Institute. 

I choose this route because it enabled me to continue working full time whilst undertaking the course.

 

What support were you given?

I was able to go to college every Friday morning. I had an allocated member of staff at Wren Spinney who acted as my mentor for the course. This meant I could go to her for any support or advice I needed regarding my assignments and observations. The college paid my mentor for undertaking this role!

 

How difficult was it to manage the course and work?

It was a challenge, and I had to be organised and ensure I managed my time effectively. However, working full time at Wren Spinney whilst studying meant that I was able to relate themes and topics we covered in college to real life classroom situations. I was also able to ‘try out’ various strategies and techniques that I learned from the tutor and my peers at college.

 

Is there anything you would change if you could to make the route more manageable?

I would have liked some study time to be made available for me during the week to enable me to complete some of the work, this would have been especially helpful during my action research project.

 

Would you recommend the route you chose to others?

I certainly would. My peers on the course came from all sectors of FE. There were lecturers in Plumbing, Mechanics and Plastering from Tresham, there were UQTs from SEN establishments such as Hinwick Hall, and staff from Princes Trust departments. This variety meant that we all had so many opportunities to share our range of knowledge and expertise.

I also feel that working full time whilst undertaking the course improved my practice. I gained in confidence during the two years and enjoyed learning the theory behind the practical nature of teaching.

 

Where are you now?

I am currently working as a UQT in a Key Stage 4 class at Wren Spinney School. I successfully completed the Cert Ed course in May 2014 and I am now in the process of applying for QTLS through the Education and Training Foundation.

 

What next?

I will (hopefully) gain my QTLS status in August this year. I hope to remain teaching at Wren Spinney.
