Craig's Story.....

Firstly, just a little about you and why you chose a route into teaching:

I was working as a teaching assistant for 4 years whilst I studied for my degree and this experience working with children really confirmed my desire to train as a teacher.

Which route did you choose and why?

Schools Direct PGCE. I felt that the on the job experience would benefit my learning and also suited my way of learning, being active and learning on the job. I felt it would benefit my opportunities to also get a job.

What support were you given?

I attended University once a week and, during my time training, I had a mentor to help and support me. At Maplefields I was also given opportunities to attend training courses and further develop my practice.

How difficult was it to manage the course and work?

At first there was a lot to take in and being organised is key. Managing folders and files for evidence on top of teaching and planning was hard but it did get easier once assignments were finished.

I’d like to add about the support and advice Maplefields gave me and the opportunities were fantastic. I really couldn’t have asked for anymore and believe that they gave me the love of teaching and working with children back as I had started to lose that.

Is there anything you would change if you could to make the route more manageable?

Communication of what is required for evidence in folder and for the PGCE.

Would you recommend the route you chose to others?

I would now it has been completed and any problems from when I trained has been adapted and improved. I feel the schools direct prepares you for the real world of teaching and expectations.

Where are you now?

I currently work at Maplefields Academy as a class teacher taking on new and exciting responsibilities.

What next?

To continue to develop my practice and further improve my role/teaching to be outstanding along with hopefully moving on to management and subject leader roles.
